Jewelry has to look good, but it also must be smooth. There shouldnīt be any sharp edges or corners. Therefore filing and abrading with sandpaper is very important.

Needle files in various forms
without handle.
There you can find exotic names like the "Birdtonguefile".
You only obtain an optimal result if you push the file. (Donīt pull!)

First work on sharp-edged borders and corners with a needle file. Then use sandpaper (280 Granulation) for a stronger handling.

If you want to polish surfaces, first look for large scratches. Work on them with rough files. Use smaller files for smaller scratches. After that, you have to work with sandpaper. Start with the gross one, switch to a finer one from time to time. In our goldsmith-courses

we use sandpaper with a granulation of 240 and 280, for very fine surfaces a 1000 or 1200 granulated one.

You can get very interesting surfaces by creating a contrast between polished and gross worked surfaces. Take a 40 granulated woodsandpaper and work criss-cross on the surface.
